My Background & Expertise

Experience

My background in admissions at the University of Virginia and years of experience as a counselor in an independent school have given me a unique perspective on the college admission process. I have a foot in both aisles and I understand how to best appeal to the institutional needs of colleges. If you’re concerned about how your child might capitalize on his strengths and passions on an application, my perspective will be invaluable to you.

Support

I have worked with hundreds of families and understand the different forces which can drive the process. I’ve been through it myself with my daughter and stepdaughters, all of them UVA alumnae. I can help you avoid unnecessary stress.

Expertise

As a former English teacher, I am adept at helping students capture their voice in compelling college essays. Essays frequently make the difference in close decisions, for they are the only place on an application where a student can speak to the reader. Given the amount of packaging some students receive these days and the natural suspicion of admissions officers, it is crucial to preserve the authenticity and personality of a student’s voice.

Rapport

I understand adolescents’ concerns and hopes, and I know how to motivate even the most reluctant of students to aim high. From the St. Anne’s yearbook dedication of 2004:

…she always puts us first. We know that she is always on our side, fighting for our well-being and peace of mind. She is the easiest person to be with, always accepting and encouraging while always expecting our best.

Creativity

I think “outside the box.” My creative approach will enable your child to distinguish his or her credentials from those of thousands of other applicants.

Confidentiality

You can rely on my discretion and loyalty to your family.
